ST. AUGUSTINE –
Anna Dumovich hit a game-ending double in the opener as Flagler College won 4-3 in nine innings while Georgia Southwestern State University used a four-run seventh to gain a split with a 5-3 win in game two Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field on "Senior Day."
Flagler moves to 30-21 overall and concludes Peach Belt Conference play with a 13-7 record. The Saints are guaranteed at least a No. 4 seed in the conference tournament, May 3-4, at Dahlonega, Georgia. Georgia Southwestern leaves with a 27-23 overall record and a 10-8 mark in league play.
In the opener, Flagler's
Kyra Gipson (18-9) pitched her best in the last four innings. The Lady 'Canes scored three runs, two of which were unearned in the fifth, but that would be all they would get the rest of the way. Gipson retired the last 13 batters in a row. She tossed all nine innings and scattered eight hits. Gipson allowed just one earned run and struck out seven.
In the bottom of the ninth,
Morgan Murphy reached first after the pitch she swung at was a wild pitch. Two batters later, Dumovich hit a double down the left field line and Murphy scored all the way from first base to win the game.
Maria Kappos collected three singles and scored a run.
Genevieve Mangini hit two singles and
Natalie Murphy went 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored, and three runs batted in.
Shannon Gibson (10-7) took the loss in the circle for Georgia Southwestern. She allowed one earned run on eight hits with seven strikeouts. Gibson helped out her own cause with two singles and an RBI.
Lauren Kuerzi had three singles and an RBI for the Lady 'Canes.
In game two, the Saints scored their first run thanks to an errant throw by the GSW catcher and Mangini's single to left scored
Zoe Mooney to give Flagler a 2-1 lead.
Mangini added an RBI single in the third.
However, Kayla Kerr's two-run double in the seventh ignited the Georgia Southwestern rally. That tied the game at 3-all and the next batter, Hayley Tierce, hit a two-run single to center to put the Lady 'Canes on top, 5-3.
Madason Messer (4-2), who came on in relief in the third inning, retired the Saints in order in the bottom of the seventh. She allowed one run on five hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Chloe Zoeller singled twice, stole two bases, and scored a run for GSW.
Alayna Savaglio (4-6) picked up the loss in relief as she surrendered three runs on two hits in four innings of work.
Mangini collected two singles and drove in two runs.
Flagler closes out the regular season on Wednesday (April 24) against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in a single game at 3:30 p.m. at Flagler Field.
NOTE: Before the doubleheader, Flagler honored its two seniors –
Garland Evans and
