Wallace and Cooksey help quiet UNC Pembroke bats in win

ST. AUGUSTINE – Cooper Wallace and Luke Cooksey managed to hold down the most powerful lineup in the Peach Belt Conference in UNC Pembroke and lead Flagler College to a 9-1 win on a blustery Thursday night at Drysdale Field.

Flagler extended its winning streak to 10 games and improved to 26-17 overall and 17-8 in the Peach Belt. UNC Pembroke has lost eight of its last 10 games and dropped to 19-24 overall and 9-16 in conference play.

The Braves came in averaging 9.0 runs per game. They took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but a two-run double by Franco Camacho capped a three-run bottom of the second for the Saints.

It stayed 3-1 until Sean Lawlor unloaded the bases with a mammoth blast to right field to stake the Saints to a 7-1 lead.

Flagler added a pair of unearned runs in the eighth.

The Saints defense flexed their muscle by turning three double plays and the outfield threw out two runners trying to score.

Cooksey (3-1) got the win in relief after tossing five scoreless innings and scattering five hits. Wallace tossed the first four and fanned four batters.

Lawlor went 2-for-4 with the grand slam and he scored two runs. Jason Moore went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs batted in, and he scored a run. Frankie Martello added a single, a double, and he scored two runs. Connor Laspina collected a pair of singles and he scored a run.

Landen Smith (2-7) tossed six innings and surrendered three runs on six hits for the Braves. He fanned eight batters.

Jarrett Mobley collected two singles and drove in a run. River Ryan went 2-for-4 with a double. Luke Jackson had a pair of singles.

The same two teams meet tomorrow evening, weather permitting, at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
