ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College baseball team found yet another way to win tonight as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10
th inning and a wild pitch scored the winning run. Flagler rallied past UNC Pembroke 6-5 in a Peach Belt Conference game Friday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler extended its winning streak to 11 games and improved to 27-17 overall and 18-8 in the Peach Belt. UNC Pembroke dropped to 19-25 overall and 9-17 in conference play.
UNCP's Justin Toney (0-2) started his third inning of relief in the bottom of the 10
th. He allowed a lead-off single up the middle by
Aaron Anderson.
Justin Neo came in to run for the Flagler designated hitter.
Jason Moore ripped a single to center that allowed the speedy Neo to advance all the way to third base.
Frankie Martello was issued an intentional walk to load the bases.
The Braves brought in Seth Hartings, who had come into the game in the ninth inning as a pinch runner for the designated hitter. He played a middle infield position as the Braves used five infielders and had two outfielders in the two gaps. But after all off the defensive positioning, the first pitch
Sean Lawlor saw one-hopped the catcher and skirted all the way to the backstop near the UNCP on deck circle. Neo just beat the throw to the plate as Toney's tag came too late.
Ethan Jones (1-4) came in to relieve starter
Robert Girgis in the eighth inning. All Jones did was keep the Braves off the board by tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings and he fanned five batters. He allowed only one base runner, and that player reached on an error.
Lawlor hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Saints a 3-2 lead.
Trailing 5-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Connor Lapina tied the game with one swing of the bat as he hit a two-run home run to left field.
Moore went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored two runs. Anderson collected two singles.
Toney tossed two-plus innings and surrendered three runs on four hits and was tagged with the loss. Brandon Winstead, the Braves closer, made his first start of the season and recorded 10 strikeouts in six innings of work.
Zach Ghelfi went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs batted in. River Ryan went 2-for-3 with a double and he scored a run.
The final game of the series will be played tomorrow (April 20) at 1 p.m. at Drysdale Field on "Senior Day."
