Softball sweeps No. 23 Georgia College

ST. AUGUSTINE – Kyra Gipson retired the first 13 batters she faced to win the opener 3-0 and Morgan Murphy's RBI single in the third led Flagler College to a 4-2 win in the second game for a sweep of No. 23 (NFCA Division II) Georgia College Thursday afternoon at Flagler Field.

The Saints have won five of their last seven games and improved to 29-20 overall and 12-6 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College lost its sixth game in a row and dropped to 31-16 overall and 9-7 in conference play.

"The girls worked hard today and earned two wins," said head coach Kathryn Geouge. "We are looking to carry this momentum with us into our final two conference games on Saturday."

Gipson (16-9) was in control as she only allowed a hit and walk. She struck out five batters and faced just one batter over the minimum. Her no-hit bid was broken up in the fifth inning, with one out, when Hannah Rogers hit a single to right.

She got all of the offense she needed in the first inning. With two outs, the Saints loaded the bases on a single, a fielding error, and a walk. Murphy hit a sharp grounder in the hole to shortstop Amber Coy. Coy got to the ball, but her throw across the diamond one-hopped the first baseman and allowed Tatum Morgan to score.

With the bases loaded, Natalie Murphy got caught in a rundown between second and third, but as she was going back and forth, Maria Kappos sped home to score. Natalie Murphy was eventually tagged out in the rundown.

Kappos hit an RBI double in the third.

NaJah Gerrald collected two singles and scored a run for Flagler.

Kayla Price (8-4) took the loss for the Bobcats. She allowed one earned run on three hits in 2 2/3 innings of work.

In game two, Kappos drove in a run with a single and the Saints added another run on a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.

Georgia College got a run back in the top of the third, but an RBI single by Morgan Murphy in the home half of the inning pushed the Flagler lead to 3-1.

The Saints added an unearned run in the sixth.

Gipson (17-9) tossed another complete game as she allowed two runs on four hits. She retired 10 batters on fly outs and six more on ground outs.

Kappos led the Saints with three singles and had one run batted in. Morgan Murphy added two singles and she drove in two runs.

Jessie Morris (5-5) surrendered three runs on five hits in two innings to pick up the loss for the Bobcats.

Haley Howell hit a solo home run fourth inning.

Flagler hosts Georgia Southwestern State University in the final conference doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Flagler Field on "Senior Day."
