ST. AUGUSTINE– No. 18 (Oracle/ITA Division II Top 25) Flagler College closed out the regular season with a 5-2 win over No. 11 University of North Georgia in a Peach Belt Conference women's tennis match Sunday afternoon at the Flagler Tennis Center.
After the match, the Saints honored its lone senior,
Felicitas Runkel, on "Senior Day."
Flagler won its seventh match in a row and improved to 15-5 overall and 8-1 in the Peach Belt. With the win, the Saints wrapped up the No. 2 seed in next weekend's conference tournament. North Georgia dropped to 16-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play.
The Saints and Nighthawks fought for the doubles point. Both teams won a match and it came down to the No. 2 contest. No. 48
Anika Nissen and
Lixin Wang kept their perfect season (13-0) intact with a 7-6(0) win over No. 47 Emma Etelalahit and Adrienne Bofinger.
Eden Schlagenhauf opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 23 Vaishali Jorge.
The Nighthawks claimed a win at No. 1, but
Alessandra Traub and Wang won their matches in straight sets to clinch the match. Wang closed out the regular season with a 14-5 record and was undefeated (10-0) playing at No. 4. Traub posted a 13-4 record and is 8-1 in her last 10 matches.
Paloma Martinez ended the regular season with a 12-6 mark after a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 win at No. 6.
There are a couple of conference matches other teams have to play until the entire tournament field can be set. The conference tournament runs from Friday-Sunday (April 19-21) at Florence, South Carolina.
