Flagler offense stymied by Young Harris

ST. AUGUSTINE – Tatum Morgan and Megan Miller collected two hits apiece in the opener, but Flagler College has held without a hit in the second game, which was called after five innings due to the weather. Young Harris College posted a 3-0 win in game one and then took game two 2-1 to sweep the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Flagler Field.

Young Harris improved to 30-16 overall and 11-5 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 27-20 overall and 10-6 in conference play.

In the opener, Haylie Shope socked a three-run home run over the right-center field wall in the third inning for the only scoring of the game.

Nikkie Kovalsky (20-9) tossed a six-hit shutout for the Mountain Lions. She fanned seven.

Morgan went 2-for-3 with a double for the Saints. Miller collected two singles. Maria Kappos added a double.

Kyra Gipson (15-9) allowed three runs on five hits. She struck out eight batters.

In game two, Emily Harris' single to left in the third inning scored Michalyn Bingham from third base to break a 1-all tie.

Young Harris added three more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead. Flagler had two runners on base in the bottom half of the inning when the skies opened up. For the better part of two and one-half hours, it rained off and on and the tarp was put on and then taken off the field twice. The game was called and all stats in the sixth inning were wiped out.

Louisa Disi (5-2) was wild, but effective enough to get the win. She allowed a run, without the benefit of a hit, and struck out six batters. Disi walked six and hit four batters.

Shope hit a solo home run in the first and Bingham collected two singles and scored a run.

Katlyn McCue (8-6) surrendered two runs on five hits for Flagler.

Anna Dumovich scored the lone run for the Saints as she scored on a bases loaded walk.

Flagler hosts Georgia College in a conference doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m. at Flagler Field.
