ST. AUGUSTINE –
Robert Girgis tossed a complete game seven-hitter in the opener and then
Blair Calvo followed with eight-plus innings and scattered seven hits to shut down the Georgia College offense in a 7-1 and 6-2 Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep on "Law Enforcement Appreciation Day" on Saturday at Drysdale Field.
Flagler extended its winning streak to eight games and improved to 24-17 overall and 16-8 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College dropped to 21-17 overall and 11-11 in conference play.
In the opener, Girgis (8-0) kept the Bobcat hitters off balance as he scattered four hits over eight innings. He got out of trouble in the ninth after loading the bases by allowing three consecutive singles. Girgis induced a 4-6-3 double play, which scored the lone run for Georgia College, and he got the last batter to hit a slow grounder to third. It was his second complete game in his career with the Saints. Girgis retired 12 batters on ground outs and another eight on fly outs.
Dillon Reed led off the bottom of the first by drawing a walk and then took second base on a single by
Aaron Anderson. A ground out moved the runners up a base and
Frankie Martello's ground ball to second scored Reed. Anderson scored when
Sean Lawlor reached first on a throwing error by the Bobcat second baseman.
The Saints added another run in the third when Reed's single plated
Jimmy Peck.
Four Saints had multiple hits. Anderson went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Lawlor went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored, and he had one run batted in. Martello collected two singles and knocked in a run while
Steven DiPuglia hit two singles and drove in a run.
Josh Hudgins (0-1), the first of seven Bobcat pitchers, took the loss. He allowed one earned run on two hits.
Garrett Green collected two singles.
In the second game, Calvo (1-1) turned in his longest outing of the season and fell three outs shy of a complete game. He fanned six batters, which tied his season-high, and allowed just two runs. Calvo faced one batter over the minimum through the first five innings.
Ryan Ashworth came on in the ninth with the bases loaded and nobody out. He struck out the first two batters he faced and then got a pop up to second base to earn his first save of the season.
A two-run single by
Jason Moore gave the Saints the early lead and Lawlor followed with an RBI single to increase Flagler's lead to 3-0 after three innings.
Franco Camacho added a run-scoring single in the sixth for insurance.
Moore finished 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Lawlor added two singles and he drove in a run. Camacho had the base hit, scored a run, and had two RBI.
Bryce Bowen (0-4) tossed two-plus innings and allowed three runs on one hit. He walked four batters. Bobcat pitching issued nine walks.
Cam Hill went 2-for-4 with a double for Georgia College. Austin Holloway collected two singles and scored a run. Green added two singles.
Flagler visits Rollins College on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Winter Park, Florida.
