ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College got a pair of solid performances in the circle from
Kyra Gipson (8-3) and
Katlyn McCue (6-4) along with
Natalie Murphy hitting two solo home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Lander University in a mutual Peach Belt Conference softball opener Saturday afternoon at Flagler Field. The Saints won the opener 6-2 and took game two, 1-0.
Flagler extended its winning streak to six games and raised its overall record to 16-10. Lander has dropped four in a row and fell to 12-8.
"I was really happy with how my team played today, especially during pressure situations," said head coach
Kathryn Geouge. "It definitely took a team effort to win both of those games."
In the opener, Murphy hit a solo home run in the second inning to give the Saints an early lead.
Flagler erupted for four runs as they batted around in the fourth inning.
Megan Miller and
Garland Evans had back-to-back RBI singles to extend the Saints lead to 3-0. Flagler added two more runs, one on a throwing error and the other came on a ground out.
Brianna Surrento hit a two-run single in the fifth to get the Bearcats on the board.
Morgan Murphy drew a bases loaded walk in the sixth to complete the scoring for Flagler.
Gipson scattered seven hits and allowed two runs to earn the win. She induced 11 fly outs and six more ground outs. Gipson retired the last seven batters in a row.
Evans collected two singles and she had one run batted in.
Ashley Vinson (5-3) took the loss for Lander. She allowed four earned runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.
Kelli McCormack hit two singles and scored a run. Kasey Rogers had a pinch-hit double and scored a run in the fifth.
In the second game, McCue tossed a five-hit shutout with three strikeouts. She allowed only three base runners to reach scoring positon. McCue retired 14 batters on fly outs and four more on ground outs.
Natalie Murphy provided the only scoring in the game with her solo home run to left field in the second inning.
Tatum Morgan and Miller had the other Flagler hits.
Abby Killian (6-3) was the hard-luck loser in the pitcher's duel. She allowed one run on three hits and struck out seven batters.
McCormack went 2-for-4 with a double for the Bearcats. Morgan Watson added two singles.
Flagler hosts Saint Leo University in a doubleheader on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Flagler Field.
