ST. AUGUSTINE –
Jaclyn Mijuskovic hit a two-run home run in the first game and then Flagler College was held without a hit in second game as it lost both games of a doubleheader to Saint Leo University Tuesday afternoon at Flagler Field. Saint Leo won the opener 4-2 and then took game two 8-0 in five innings.
Saint Leo improved to 16-11 while Flagler had its six-game winning streak snapped and fell to 16-12.
In the opener, the Lions struck first. With two outs in the first inning, and a runner on third base, Sarah Pauscher hit a grounder back to the circle and Flagler pitcher
Kyra Gipson (8-4) had a hard time finding a grip on the ball and the run scored.
In the second inning, Saint Leo loaded the bases with nobody out. Ashley Morris hit a chopper to
Morgan Murphy at second base, who charged the bounding ball, but the throw to the plate was too late and the Lions took a 2-0 lead. Deanna Falciglia was tagged out trying to score from second base when a couple of rundown situations occurred after the run scored.
Morgan Murphy led off the bottom of the second with a base hit to center, and two batters later, Mijuskovic hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to tie the game.
Both pitchers settled in and nothing happened until the top of the seventh. Alyssa Wash led off with an infield single, and Falciglia sacrificed pinch runner Bailey Burk to second. Two batters later, Morris singled to center to plate Burk with the go-ahead run. Morris took second on the throw to the plate and then scampered to third when the throw one-hopped Mijuskovic and caromed towards the Saint Leo on-deck circle. Morris scored the insurance run on a bunt-single by Shyanne DuBois.
Auria Mounts (9-6) scattered three hits and allowed two runs for the Lions. She fanned seven batters and allowed three walks.
Morris collected two singles, scored two runs, and drove in another. Wash hit two singles and scored a run.
Gipson allowed two earned runs and eight hits.
Garland Evans had the other Flagler hit.
In game two, Sadi Avants (3-1) retired the first nine batters she faced and held the Saints without a hit. She did not strikeout a batter, but she retired six on fly outs and eight more on ground outs.
Avants got all of the offense she needed in the first inning. Kacie Kelly reached first, to lead off the game, on a fielding error by
Tatum Morgan. Kelly was sacrificed over to second base and took third when the bag was not defended. She scored on a wild pitch to give Saint Leo the lead. The Lions added another run on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Kendyl Crean hit a three-run home run in the third and then Saint Leo added three more in the top of the fifth.
DuBois hit two singles and scored two runs.
Alayna Savaglio (2-4) surrendered six earned runs on six hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. She walked six batters.
Evans, Morgan, and
Maria Kappos drew consecutive walks to start the fourth inning.
Flagler is back in action on March 18 at Barry University in Miami Shores for a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
