Saints pitching spins out Hurricanes in sweep

AMERICUS, Ga. – Robert Girgis (4-0) struck out nine batters in the first game and Ryan Ashworth (3-2) pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings in relief in game two as Flagler College swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Georgia Southwestern State University Saturday afternoon at Hurricane Stadium. Flagler won the opener 5-2 and completed the sweep with a 4-2 victory in game two.

Flagler improved to 13-10 overall and 7-5 in the Peach Belt. Georgia Southwestern fell to 9-13 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

Girgis wiggled out of trouble in the first inning allowing one run to score, but he finished strong as he retired 14-of-the-last-16 batters he faced. Girgis scattered six hits and one run in seven innings. Nick Martinez came in for one-third of an inning before giving way to Ethan Jones who closed the game for his fourth save of the year. He tossed the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed two hits with three strikeouts.

Ja'Kobi Dasher led off the third inning with a single, moved to second on a hit batter, stole third base, and scored on a ground out to tie the game.

Sean Lawlor started the fourth with a single up the middle and then took second on a hit batter. He scored on the next play as the Hurricane first baseman could not handle the throw from his second baseman.

The insurance run came in the fifth and started with Dillon Reed hitting a double to right field. That was the third consecutive inning the Saints had the leadoff hitter on base. Three batters later, Lawlor drove him in with a single.

Flagler added two more runs in the sixth.

Lawlor collected two singles, scored a run, and drove in another. Connor Laspina and Jimmy Peck each hit a double.

Sage Holderfield (1-4) took the loss for Georgia Southwestern. He allowed one earned run and four hits in four innings. Holderfield struck out four batters. Jared Donaldson was roughed up in an inning and one-third. He surrendered five hits and two earned runs.

Matthew Mamamtas collected three singles and drove in both runs. Bradley Hough hit two singles.

In the second game, both teams scored two runs apiece in the first inning, but for Georgia Southwestern, that would be all of the offense they could drum up.

Ashworth came on to pitch in the fourth inning and kept the Hurricanes off balance. He induced five fly outs, seven ground outs, and fanned four batters. Ashworth allowed only four hits and just two base runners to reach scoring position.

With the score still deadlocked at 2-all going into the ninth, Hurricane reliever Cole Garrett entered the game and walked two-of-the-three hitters he faced. He was lifted for Harrison Timberlake who got Zach Heming to fly out to center field, but deep enough that both runners were able to tag up. Reed ripped a single back up the middle to score both runs.

The Hurricanes got a runner on first in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, but Ashworth got the last hitter to fly out to right field.

Reed singled twice, scored a run, and drove in two. Heming finished with two singles.

Garrett (1-2) was tagged with the loss. He walked two batters in his one-third of an inning and both runners scored.

Tyler Skelton finished with two singles and he scored a run. Any Moore and Jacob Harrell each hit two singles.

Up next for Flagler is another road game, this time at No. 4 (Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 40) Florida Southern College. The game will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Lakeland.
