Hurricanes score nine runs in two innings to defeat Saints

AMERICUS, Ga. – Georgia Southwestern State University did its damage in the third and fifth innings in a 9-2 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Hurricane Stadium.

Georgia Southwestern improved to 9-11 overall and 4-6 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 11-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

The Saints took an early lead when Aaron Anderson's double down the left field line scored Frankie Martello from second base.

In the bottom of the third, the Hurricanes got the lead-off hitter on, Bradley Hough, via a walk. He was sacrificed over to second base and then scored on Jason Baita's triple to right field. The next batter, Tyler Skelton, singled up the middle to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead.

Later, with runners at first and second and two outs, Andy Moore hit a ground ball into the hole at shortstop. Steven DiPuglia ranged over, but his throw to second for a force out was wide of the bag and another run scored. Matthew Mamatas hit a ground ball to Frankie Martello at third base, but his throw went over the head of Anderson at first base and two more runs came in.

Georgia Southwestern scored two runs as well as two unearned runs in the fifth.

Tyler Skelton went 2-for-4 with a double, one run batted in, and he scored two runs. Jonathan Martin collected two singles, scored two runs and drove another in. Hunter Foster finished with a pair of singles, one RBI, and he scored a run. Jacob Harrell singled twice and drove in a run.

Tucker Smith (4-0) scattered four hits and allowed two runs in a complete game effort. He struck out six and walked one.

Martello, Jason Moore, and Connor Laspina hit singles for the Saints.

Derick Garcia (3-2) took the loss on the hill. He surrendered nine hits and four earned runs in five innings of work. Garcia fanned five batters. Kyle Hansen went the rest of the way.

The same two teams meet in a doubleheader tomorrow at noon.
