Saints rally to win game one and Evans triple completes sweep

TAMPA, Fla. – Flagler College used a four-run seventh inning to win game one, 5-3, and Garland Evans' two-run triple in the fourth helped the Saints complete the sweep with a 3-1 win over the University of Tampa at the Naimoli Family Softball Field Tuesday afternoon.

Flagler extended its winning streak to four games and improved to 14-10. Tampa is in the midst of a six-game losing streak and fell to 10-8.

"I am very proud of how we played today against a tough Tampa team," said head coach Kathryn Geouge. "We pitched well, had solid defense, and hit the ball hard. You can't ask for much more from a team than what I got today."

In the opener, the Saints were down 3-1 going into the top of the seventh inning. Cassie Patterson got the rally started by hitting a one-out single to right field. Zoe Mooney came in to run for Patterson and she scored on Jaclyn Mijuskovic's double to left field. After the second out was recorded, and a walk to Evans put runners on the corners, Tatum Morgan reached on an infield hit to second base that scored pinch runner NaJah Gerrald from third base to tie the game. Genevieve Mangini hit a single to right field to score Evans. Mangini and Morgan both advanced a base on the throw to the plate. A wild pitch scored Morgan with the insurance run.

Kyra Gipson (7-3) allowed a lead-off single in the bottom of the seventh, but got the next two batters to pop up and the last to fly out to end the game. She allowed three runs on four hits with a pair of strikeouts. Gipson retired 14 batters on fly outs and five more on ground outs.

Maria Kappos hit a triple for the Saints and scored a run.

Makaleigh Dooley (8-4) allowed five runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings of work and took the loss for the Spartans. She struck out eight batters.

Sam Worrell hit a two-run double in the first inning and Stephanie Balmer hit a double in the sixth and scored a run.

In the second game, the Saints scored a run in the first, but it was Evans' two-run triple in the fourth that put the game away.

Katlyn McCue (5-4) scattered three hits and allowed an unearned run to record the victory. She retired 12 batters on fly outs and seven more on ground outs.

Kappos collected two singles and Patterson went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Worrell (0-2) surrendered three runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings in the circle. Corynn Minor tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

Three different Spartans hit a single.

Flagler opens Peach Belt Conference play on Saturday (March 9) at 1 p.m. against Lander University at Flagler Field.
