Saints rally past No. 19 Cougars

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College used a three-run fifth inning to rally past No. 19 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Columbus State University 4-3 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon on "Red Cox Day" at Drysdale Field.

Flagler improved to 18-17 overall and 12-8 in the Peach Belt. Columbus State dropped to 20-10 overall and 8-6 in conference play.

Trailing 3-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, Steven DiPuglia started the rally with an infield single to shortstop. Aaron Anderson drew a walk and Jason Moore belted a double into the gap in left-center to plate DiPuglia. Frankie Martello grounded out to short, but Anderson was able to score on the play to tie the game. Sean Lawlor hit a flare to left-center that fell in and Moore scored all the way from second to give the Saints the lead.

Robert Girgis (7-0) kept the Cougars off the board the following two innings before giving way to closer Ethan Jones. Jones struck out five-of-the-seven batters he faced to record his fifth save of the year.

Girgis allowed one earned run on eight hits with five strikeouts.

Lawlor collected three singles and knocked in two runs. Martello went 2-for-4 with a double with a run and an RBI.

Sam Sowerbrower (2-1) scattered eight hits and allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings. He fanned six batters. Thomas Howell finished the game for Columbus State.

Kendall Ford finished with two singles and scored two runs for the Cougars. Bryce Delevie collected two singles.

The same two teams will play tomorrow at 1 p.m. to conclude the three-game series at Drysdale Field.
