Saints erupt in eighth to upset No. 19 Cougars

ST. AUGUSTINE – Aaron Anderson hit a pair of doubles while Cooper Wallace and Luke Cooksey combined on a shutout as Flagler College blanked No. 19 (Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division II Top 30) Columbus State University 6-0 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.

Flagler stopped a two-game losing skid and improved to 17-17 overall and 11-8 in the Peach Belt. Columbus State dropped to 20-9 overall and 8-5 in conference play.

The Saints broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning. With two outs, Anderson laced a double down the right field line. Columbus State right fielder Drew Webb got to the ball quickly, but double-pumped before making an errant throw to second base. The throw allowed Anderson to get to third and was far enough away from any fielder to allow Anderson to score the game's first run.

Flagler sent 10 men to the plate in the eighth to put the game away. Jason Moore had an RBI double.

Cooksey (1-1) tossed six shutout innings in relief to pick up the win. He fanned four and allowed just two hits. Cooksey retired the last 11 batters in a row. Wallace started and tossed three scoreless innings.

Anderson scored a pair of runs for the Saints.

Jalen Latta (2-4) was the hard-luck loser in the game as he surrendered an unearned run on two hits. He fanned seven with two walks. Sheldon Coy allowed three earned runs on five hits in his one inning of work.

Frank Wager and Dane Bullock each hit a double for the Cougars.

The same two teams will play tomorrow at 2 p.m. on "Red" Cox Day at Drysdale Field.
