Saints wrap up No. 3 seed with romp over Braves

ST. AUGUSTINE – Tabitha Odabe scored a game-high 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and blocked three shots to help Flagler College defeat the University of North Carolina at Pembroke 65-39 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler wrapped up the No. 3 seed, its highest seed ever, in next week's conference tournament with a 21-7 overall record and a 17-5 mark in the Peach Belt. The 17 league wins are the most a Flagler team has recorded since joining the PBC in 2009-10. UNC Pembroke saw its season come to an end with an 8-20 record and a 7-15 conference mark.

"I am excited that we were able to finish the regular season with a home win for our seniors as well as for the fans that have supported us all year," said head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery.

Odabe was one of four seniors honored before the game. Kara McKissack, Malaysia Robinson, and Tatiyana Rock joined Odabe in being recognized for their careers.

A basket by Kierra Crane wiped out a 10-9 lead by UNCP and sparked a 6-0 run by Flagler to close out the first quarter.

Odabe scored seven of Flagler's 17 points in the second quarter, which helped the Saints expand the lead to double digits.

Dayuna Johnson added 11 points for the Saints while Crane came off the bench to score 10 points and grab five rebounds. Rock chipped in with 10 points.

Flagler out-rebounded UNC Pembroke 48-30 and the Saints grabbed 18 offensive boards, which led to 20 second chance points.

"I was really pleased with our defensive effort today, particularly our rebounding," added Lang-Montgomery. "Defense and rebounding are two areas we have emphasized the past few weeks. We know if we want the season to continue, that has to be a part of our performance every time we step on the court."

Tee Graham led the Braves with nine points while Aliyah Farmer tacked on eight more. ShaNiya Lester and Danielle Heath each grabbed five rebounds.

The 39 points the Saints allowed were the fewest ever since a 61-35 victory over Ave Maria University to open the 2015-16 season.

Flagler will host a conference tournament quarterfinal on Wednesday (March 6) at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium. The Saints will face the No. 6 seed, Columbus State University.
