ST. AUGUSTINE – Tatiana Wayne poured in a game-high 29 points on 10-of-25 shooting from the field to lift No. 6 seed Columbus State University to a 71-68 victory in overtime over No. 3 seed Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal game Wednesday night at Flagler Gymnasium.
Columbus State improved to 15-12 overall and advances to face No. 2 Lander University on Saturday at Augusta, Georgia. Flagler falls to 21-8 overall and will now have to wait to see if it earns one of five at-large berths to the regional. The selection show is on Sunday at 10 p.m.
Flagler's
Tabitha Odabe broke three school records, all three she previously held. She broke the blocked shots in a game mark (13), blocked shots in a season (116), and rebounds in a season (318). Odabe also broke the PBC record for blocks in a game. She grabbed 15 rebounds.
Wayne was limited to just six points in the first half. She scored 10 points in the third and fourth quarters.
The Saints came out and dominated the first quarter and led 26-10 at the end of the first 10 minutes.
Both teams struggled to shoot in the second quarter with the Lady Cougars making 25 percent of their shots and the Saints shot at a 22.2 percent clip. Flagler led at the break 38-20.
Columbus State started the comeback in the third quarter, but it was a 27-12 fourth quarter where the Lady Cougars held the momentum. Kaihla Carter sank a three-pointer with 20 seconds left to go in regulation to tie the score at 63.
The Saints had the opportunity to take a lead before the end of the fourth quarter. But
Ivana Boyd missed two free throws with 14 seconds left. Flagler made only 16-of-35 free throw attempts (45.7 percent).
In the extra session,
Dayuna Johnson made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left to tie the game at 68-all.
But with less than a second left in the game, Jumee Smith made a layup, her only basket of the game, to give Columbus State the lead. She was fouled on the play and made the free throw to push the lead to three.
Flagler called timeout and advanced the ball. But with four-tenths of a second on the game clock, the in-bounds pass was blocked out of bounds and one-tenth of a second was put on the clock, which is not enough time to score a basket.
Taya Gibson recorded a double-double with 14 points and 17 rebounds. Tatum Jarvis added 10 boards.
Kierra Crane led the Saints with 15 points while
Chris Wilson added 14 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
Malaysia Robinson chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.
Columbus State out-rebounded Flagler 60-53 and grabbed 23 offensive rebounds that led to 20 second chance points.
