MIAMI SHORES, Fla. –
Kyra Gipson tossed a four-hit shutout in the opener and Flagler College took advantage of four Barry University errors to complete a doubleheader sweep Monday evening at Buccaneer Field. The Saints won the first game 1-0 and then took game two 5-3.
Flagler improved to 18-12 overall while Barry dropped to 11-24.
In the opener, Gipson (9-4) struck out a season-high eight batters and retired 13-of-16 batters in one stretch.
The Saints offense got a charge in the fifth inning.
Jaclyn Mijuskovic reached first on an infield single.
Zoe Mooney came in to run for Mijuskovic and promptly stole second base. Two batters later,
Garland Evans' base hit between first and second base scored Mooney with the game's only run.
Tatum Morgan collected two singles for the Saints.
Gabby Vallee (9-14) took the loss in the circle for the Buccaneers. She scattered five hits and allowed the lone run. Vallee struck out four batters.
In the second game, Barry committed four errors and all five Flagler runs were unearned.
Morgan Murphy's double in the first scored Morgan who reached on an error earlier in the inning.
In the third,
Natalie Murphy hit a one-out double and Flagler had two runners in scoring position.
Maria Kappos popped up to Buccaneer second baseman Ayana Andrade-Zygmunt who dropped the ball allowing Morgan to score from third base.
Morgan Murphy followed with a grounder to third that was misplayed and another run scored to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.
Genevieve Mangini hit a single back to the pitcher that scored Kappos.
The Saints added another run in the sixth inning with the help of a throwing error on a double steal.
Lynsey Duncan hit a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the sixth for Barry.
Katlyn McCue (7-4) allowed eight hits and three unearned runs. She tied her career-high with eight strikeouts. McCue retired another 12 batters on fly outs.
Mangini finished with two singles, a run batted in, and a stolen base.
NaJah Gerrald stole two bases.
Vallee (9-15) tossed three innings, allowed five hits, and four unearned runs in the loss.
Berlin Colvin went 2-for-4 with a double and she scored a run for the Buccaneers. Savannah Starling collected two singles.
Flagler's doubleheader at Nova Southeastern University, scheduled for tomorrow, has been canceled due to impending weather. The Saints will head to Augusta, Georgia for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Augusta University on Saturday at noon.
