AUGUSTA, Ga. –
Kyra Gipson (11-4) earned a pair of wins in the circle as Flagler College swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, 9-0 and 4-2, from Augusta University Saturday afternoon at Jaguar Field.
Flagler has won four games in a row and it improved to 20-12 overall and 4-0 in the Peach Belt. Augusta lost its eighth consecutive game and fell to 3-19 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
"The girls worked really hard today," said head coach
Kathryn Geouge. "I am really proud of the fight we showed in the second game."
In the opener, Gipson retired the first 14 batters she faced and it was a single to center by Olivia Biles with two outs in the fifth inning that broke up her bid at a perfect game. Gipson fanned five batters and she did not issue a walk.
She got all of the offense she would need as
Natalie Murphy hit an RBI double in the first inning to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. A wild pitch and a passed ball led to two more runs in the opening frame for Flagler.
Megan Miller hit a solo home run in the second inning and
Maria Kappos hit a two-run shot in the third. The Saints won the game in five innings.
Murphy hit two doubles, scored two runs and drove in a pair. Miller added a double to her home run earlier in the game. She finished with two runs batted in.
Courtney Browne (0-3) could not get out of first inning as she faced three batters, allowed one hit and two earned runs.
In the second game, Augusta's Lauren Prescott hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to wipeout a 1-0 Flagler lead.
The Saints tied it in the fifth as
Garland Evans led off the inning with a double and later scored on a ground out.
That was all the scoring until the eighth. Kappos reached on an error, took second on an infield single by
Morgan Murphy, and two batters later,
Jaclyn Mijuskovic hit a two-run double to give Flagler a 4-2 lead.
Gipson, working in her fifth inning of relief, retired the side in order in the bottom of the eighth.
She allowed two runs on three hits in her five innings of work.
Evans went 2-for-4 with the double and she scored two runs.
Morgan Murphy collected two singles.
Morgan Hunter (2-9) allowed two earned runs on eight hits for the Jaguars.
Savannah Gabriel went 2-for-4 with a double for Augusta.
Flagler hosts Florida Tech on Wednesday (March 27) in a single game at 5 p.m. at Flagler Field.
