GREENWOOD, S.C. – No. 8 (Oracle/ITA Division II Top 25) Lander University edged No. 15 Flagler College 4-3 in a Peach Belt Conference men's tennis match Sunday afternoon at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
Lander won its fourth match in a row and improved to 9-2 overall and 2-0 in the Peach Belt. Flagler had its four-match winning streak snapped and fell to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
"We lost a tough match today," said director of tennis Thomas
Hipp. "We fought hard but came short. We have a hard time playing on these courts especially returning in doubles. Felipe (
Carvalho) had a great win at No. 3 vs the former No.1 player!"
The two teams split the first two doubles matches. However,
Felipe Carvalho and
Rasmus Jonsson were defeated at No. 2 doubles by Eirik Groner and Gabriel Couto 6-3 and the point went to Lander.
Lukas Storck defeated No. 17 Ozan Cildir in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) at No. 1 singles to tie the match. The Bearcats won the next two singles matches, but Carvalho knocked off No. 24 Groner 2-6, 6-2, and 6-4 to stave off a team loss (3-2). Lander clinched the match when Thomas De Negri defeated
Konstantin Dustmann 6-0, 6-7(3), and 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Daniel Arrien won his match at No. 5.
Flagler will rest and prepare to face the defending national champions, Columbus State University, on Saturday at Columbus, Georgia.
