ST. AUGUSTINE – The No. 15 (Oracle/ITA Division II ranking) Flagler College men's tennis team opened Peach Belt Conference play with a 5-2 victory over Augusta University Wednesday afternoon at the Flagler Tennis Center.
Flagler won its third match in a row and improved to 8-3. Augusta lost its fourth match in a row and dropped to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
"We were glad to win our first conference match of the year," said director of tennis
Thomas Hipp. "There is more PBC action to come this weekend with Francis Marion and Lander."
The Saints won all three doubles matches, but it was
Rasmus Jonsson and
Felipe Carvalho who clinched the point with a 6-2 win at No. 2.
Luca Bolla and Carvalho won their singles matches in straight sets to give Flagler a commanding 3-0 lead. Augusta picked up a point by winning No. 6 singles. Then
Daniel Arrien defeated Lucas Bolle 6-4 and 6-4 to clinch the match for the Saints (4-1).
Lukas Storck knocked off No. 30 Patrick Oliveira 6-4, 7-6 (6) for the other Flagler point.
Flagler travels to Florence, South Carolina to face Francis Marion University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
