Martello’s single drives in the game-winning run

ST. AUGUSTINE – Frankie Martello's RBI single in the seventh inning proved to be the game-winning hit as Flagler College edged Lander University 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.

Flagler, playing its first home game in 17 days, improved to 8-8 overall and 3-4 in the Peach Belt. Lander fell to 8-9 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Sean Lawlor drew a one-out walk to get the seventh started for the Saints. Jason Moore followed and was hit by a pitch. Martello laced a 1-1 pitch into right field and Lawlor was waved around third base. The throw was cut-off by Lander first baseman Nathan Schreckengost who then threw to the plate wildly as Lawlor crossed the plate.

That's all Derick Garcia (3-1) would need as he scattered seven hits and allowed an unearned run in 7 2/3 innings of work. He struck out six batters. Ethan Jones closed the game and earned his second save after retiring all four batters he faced. Two were strikeouts.

Austin Davis hit an RBI double in the fourth inning for Flagler's other run. He finished with two hits. Martello hit two singles. Connor Laspina had a pinch hit double.

Fraser Ellard (0-1) picked up the loss in relief for the Bearcats. He allowed three hits and one run in three innings pitched. He struck out four batters. Alex Moore started and fanned nine batters in five innings. He walked five and allowed five hits as well as a run.

Carson Jones went 3-for-3 with two doubles. He was thrown out at the plate after trying to score from second base on a Ward Betts single to right field.

The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
