ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College pounded out 33 hits and scored 26 runs in a season-opening doubleheader sweep of Barton College, 11-0 and 15-8, Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Steven DiPuglia and
Aaron Anderson each collected five hits in the two games total, but DiPuglia hit a double and a triple. He also scored four runs and stole a base.
In the first game,
Derick Garcia (1-0) retired the last nine batters he faced in a row to earn his first win. He tossed six scoreless innings, allowed one hit, and fanned five batters.
He got all of the runs he needed in the first inning. After a pair of walks to start the inning, Anderson ripped a single back up the middle which plated leadoff hitter
Dillon Reed.
The Saints tallied eight runs total in the third, fourth, and fifth innings before scoring a pair of runs in the eighth.
Anderson collected two singles to pace the 13-hit attack. He scored a run, and drove in two more.
Ja'Kobi Dasher went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored while
Sean Lawlor had a pair of RBI singles. DiPuglia went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored two runs.
Jakub Ryan (0-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs. He allowed six runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings pitched.
JoJo Allen had the lone hit for Barton, a leadoff single in the third inning.
In the second game, Barton took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning and that's when the Flagler bats woke up again and scored seven runs on five hits to take an 8-4 lead.
Anderson's bases-clearing double tied the game at 4 and he later scored on Lawlor's single to center to give Flagler the lead.
The Saints also plated seven runs in the seventh.
Anderson and
Jason Moore, the 3-4 hitters in the lineup, combined to go 6-for-11 with six RBI and four runs scored. Anderson had two singles and the double to go along with two runs scored and three driven in. Moore was a triple shy of the cycle and had three RBI as well as two runs scored.
DiPuglia went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and one run batted in.
Ryan Ashworth (1-0) came out of the bullpen and tossed three innings to earn the save. He allowed two runs on two hits and struck out four batters.
Alex Hart (0-1) took the loss in relief for Barton. He last one-third of an inning and allowed six runs on four hits.
The first three batters in the Bulldogs' lineup went a combined 6-for-12 with six runs scored and three RBI. Jacob Marcos singled twice and scored three runs. Troy Maslowski singled, doubled, scored two runs and knocked in two more.
The same two teams meet tomorrow at noon at Drysdale Field.
