Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Saints use a big third quarter to subdue the Lady Cougars

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Tabitha Odabe recorded her 17th double-double of the season as she scored a game-high 18 points and grabbed a game-high 18 rebounds as Flagler College defeated Columbus State University 66-51 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at the Lumpkin Center.

Flagler won its fourth game in a row to improve to 20-7 overall and 16-5 in the Peach Belt. The last time the Saints won 20 games in a season was in the 1998-99 season (20-14). The 16 league wins matches last year's total, which was a program-high. Columbus State had its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 14-11 overall and 11-10 in conference play.

"I am so proud of our team," said head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery. "We battled for 40 minutes tonight. We were gritty and gutsy and that's all a coach can ask for. Tabitha had another strong performance and I thought this was Dayuna's (Johnson) most complete game. She was composed, took care of the ball, and made big shots."

The two teams played to a 35-all tie through the first 20 minutes, but the Saints dominated in the third quarter as they out-scored the Lady Cougars 22-8. Columbus State only made 15.8 percent (3-19) of its shots from the field in that quarter.

Tatum Jarvis made the first of two free throws to give the Lady Cougars a 41-38 lead with just under seven minutes to go in the third quarter.

Johnson eliminated the Columbus State advantage by making a three-pointer with 6:37 left and that started a 19-2 run by the Saints to close the third quarter. Johnson's basket also began a string of 16 unanswered points by Flagler.

Both teams struggled to shoot in the fourth quarter as Flagler went 0-for-8 from the field and Columbus State only made 3-of-22. The teams combined to scored 17 points.

The Lady Cougars shot 14.6 percent (6-41) from the floor in the second half.

Johnson scored a season-high 15 points for the Saints. She sank four 3-pointers. Malaysia Robinson added 14 points and six rebounds coming off the bench. Kierra Crane tacked on 10 points and seven rebounds. Ivana Boyd corralled nine rebounds and tallied five assists.

Tatiana Wade led Columbus State with 16 points, but shot 25 percent (5-20) from the field. Jarvis added six points and eight rebounds.

Flagler plays its regular season finale on Saturday against UNC Pembroke at 1:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium. The four Saints seniors will be honored before the game.
