FLORENCE, S.C. –
Tabitha Odabe recorded her third consecutive double-double with a 28-point, 13-rebound effort which helped Flagler College fend off an upset-minded Francis Marion University team 63-60 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Smith University Center.
Flagler improved to 19-7 overall and 15-5 in the Peach Belt. The 19 wins are the most an
Erika Lang-Montgomery team has posted and is the most in the program's history since the 1998-99 team won 20 games. Francis Marion dropped to 10-14 overall and 7-13 in conference play.
"Before the game we talked about being gritty and fighting to the end," said Lang-Montgomery. "That is exactly what this team did today. We really have been putting an emphasis on defense the last couple of weeks. We knew we had to contain Shaunice Fulmore and limit her touches. Tabitha was a force inside again."
Odabe made the second of two free throws to give the Saints a 62-52 lead with 2:52 remaining in the game.
Kiana Adderton sank a pair of free throws and Zaria Woods made back-to-back layups and all of a sudden, the Patriots trailed by just four (62-58) with 42 seconds left.
Chris Wilson missed a jumper the next time down the court for Flagler, but Fulmore grabbed the rebound and went coast-to-coast, nailing a jumper with 19 seconds left to cut the Saints lead to two (62-60).
After a Francis Marion timeout, Adderton fouled
Kierra Crane who made the first of two free throws. The rebound went to Woods who then dribbled all the way down and missed a layup with five seconds and Wilson was there for Flagler to grab the rebound.
She was fouled and then missed both free throws with two seconds left. The Patriots did not have enough time to get a shot off.
Wilson was held to just six points, but she grabbed seven rebounds.
Dayuna Johnson and
Tatiyana Rock each scored nine points.
Adderton led the Patriots with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Fulmore added 14 points and six rebounds while Abigail Bullock finished with 14 points and five assists. Woods chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Flagler plays its final regular season road game on Wednesday (Feb. 27) at Columbus State University.
