Odabe’s buzzer-beater pushes Saints past Pacers

ST. AUGUSTINE – Tabitha Odabe's 10-foot jumper as time expired gave Flagler College a hard-fought 67-66 win over the University of South Carolina Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday evening at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler improved to 16-6 overall and 12-4 in the Peach Belt. USC Aiken falls to 12-11 overall and 8-9 in conference play.

"We snatched victory from the jaws of defeat," said head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery. "I am proud of my team for believing until the very end. I liked our defensive intensity in the first half. We are still learning how to put two halves together."

The Saints held an 18-point lead in the second quarter, but a Kwajelin Farrar jumper with one second left to go capped a 15-3 run by the Pacers giving the team their first lead (66-65) since the first basket of the game.

Flagler called a timeout and advanced the ball to just over half-court. Ivana Boyd found Odabe outside the lane for a quick turnaround jumper and the ball went through the hoop as time expired. The referees met at the top of the key for a conference while the Saints jumped in jubilation. After a brief talk, the officials confirmed the basket beat the buzzer.

The game started with both teams struggling offensively. Flagler was able to go on a 10-2 run and held a 14-10 edge at the end of the first quarter. The Saints made 33.3 percent (5-15) from the field while the Pacers were equally frigid at 36.4 percent (4-11).

Kierra Crane's bucket at the buzzer of the first quarter ignited an 18-2 spurt by the Saints, which was capped by a layup by Chris Wilson to give Flagler a 30-12 lead.

The Saints held a 35-23 lead at the half.

Odabe scored 14 of her game-high 20 points in the second half. Wilson added 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Jazzy Mathis scored the most points in her career (11) since scoring 19 vs. USC Aiken on Jan. 28, 2017. Boyd grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists.

The Saints took advantage of 12 Pacer turnovers by converting them into 18 points.

Kyrie' Chandler led USC Aiken with 19 points and five assists. Farrar finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Flagler will take on Clayton State University on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Morrow, Georgia.
