Habeeb scores golden goal as Saints clinch a share of the league title Saturday

ST. AUGUSTINE – Annie Habeeb scored the game-winner with 2:47 remaining in the first overtime to lift No. 3 (United Soccer Coaches D2 Top 25) Flagler College to a gritty 3-2 victory over visiting Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match at Saints Field on Saturday.

The win gives the Saints (15-0-1, 9-0-1 PBC) at least a share of the PBC regular season championship, the first conference title in the program's NCAA Division II era. The victory also locks up the No. 1 seed for the upcoming PBC Tournament.

Flagler, which checked in at No. 1 in the first NCAA Division II Southeast Region poll released earlier this week, can capture the league's regular season crown outright with a win or draw in next Saturday's season finale at Francis Marion.

"The staff are immensely proud of the team for their performance today," said head coach Ashley Martin. "To find a way to win under pressure was difficult, but the entire squad refused to accept anything less than a win. There was an incredible energy both on the field and from the sideline which almost willed the ball over the line in overtime.

"Now we reset and look to prepare for a tough game at Francis Marion."

Habeeb scored twice for the Saints, who had to fight back from a second half deficit for just the third time this season. After Sara Sandberg equalized in the 55th minute, Habeeb's first goal of the game put Flagler up 2-1 with just over 10 minutes to play. Habeeb out-ran a Lander defender to Sandberg's rebounded shot and toed her attempt into the top of the goal to put Flagler on the verge of sealing the match in regulation.

But an own goal in the 86th minute evened the match at 2-2 and the Bearcats (5-8-2, 3-5-2 PBC) nearly stunned the Saints just before the final horn, as Katie Arthur's long-range attempt caromed off the crossbar in the 87th minute.

Flagler took advantage of its new life in the first overtime, taking the only two shots of the extra period. Habeeb's golden goal came off a gorgeous cross by Josefine Nilsen, who picked out Habeeb just inside the 18-yard box. Habeeb one-timed the offering back across frame and past a diving Sarah Owen, sending the Saints into a frenzy.

Flagler dominated possession for much of the match, registering a 19-8 edge in shots and a 14-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Bearcats made the most of that one corner opportunity, however, as Haleigh Bollig curled her corner into the net for a 1-0 Lander lead just 1-minue, 3-seconds into the second half.

Sandberg answered for the Saints just under 10 minutes later, getting on the other end of a Brin Wexler flick into the box and powering a shot far post past Owen to tie the game. That goal, Sandberg's 19th of the season, placed her in the Flagler record books as the top single-season goal scorer in program history.

Sarah-Lisa Dubel made five saves in goal for Flagler. The Saints back line of Hannah Dolores, Sara Carr and Shannon Matthaei were excellent for Flagler, each playing the full 97 minutes and keeping many of the Bearcat attempts from distance.

Owen kept the Bearcats within striking distance for much of the game by making nine saves for the guests.

Flagler wraps up the regular season next Saturday when it travels to Florence, South Carolina, for a conference tilt with Francis Marion University.
