No. 3 Flagler wins its first conference title with 6-1 romp

FLORENCE, S.C. – Josefine Nilsen scored two goals and assisted on three more as No. 3 (United Soccer Coaches D2 Top 25) Flagler College rolled to a 6-1 win over Francis Marion University in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Hartzler Field.

With the win, Flagler (16-0-1 overall, 10-0-1 PBC) wins its first Peach Belt Conference regular season title, which is the first such title in the program's history.

It took the Saints less than a minute (58 seconds) to score the first goal of the match. Sara Sandberg tallied her team-leading 20th goal with Lorena Lopez and Nilsen assisting.

Francis Marion (8-8-1, 4-7-0) scored the equalizer in the 30th minute as Sierra Cartano got the Patriots on the board.

A Charlene Nowotny bicycle kick found the back of the net in the 42nd minute to give the Saints a 2-1 lead at the half.

Nilsen scored her goals in the 80th and 86th minutes. Annie Habeeb (73') and Liz Hall (83') also scored a goal in the second half.

Sarah-Lisa Dubel tallied three saves for the Saints while Micahla Kitchen finished with four saves for the Patriots.

Flagler out-shot Francis Marion 22-9 and had a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. Each team had three corner kicks.    
 
Flagler, which already had secured the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament last week, will host No. 8 seed Lander University on Tuesday (Nov. 12) at a time to be determined. The winner advances to the semifinal round in Evans, Georgia on Nov. 15.
