McGuire scores three goals in Flagler’s victory over No. 21 Lander

ST. AUGUSTINE – Dan McGuire scored three goals as Flagler College triumphed over No. 21 (United Soccer Coaches D2 Top 25) Lander University 6-2 in a Peach Belt Conference men's soccer match Saturday evening at Saints Field.

Before the match the Saints honored its seniors Graham Grassmyer, Joaquin Gutierrez, and Henrique Salomao.

The win was Flagler's (4-11-1 overall, 3-4-0 PBC) first over a nationally-ranked team since Oct. 17, 2015. Coincidentally, the team the Saints beat was then-No. 21 Lander at Saints Field. The final score was 1-0.

McGuire scored the first of his three goals, in succession, in the 38th minute to break a 1-all tie. He took advantage of a failed clear attempt by a Lander player and scored from just outside the box.

His next tally was just over two minutes later as he converted a penalty kick to stake Flagler to a 3-1 lead.

Four minutes later, Christian Wnuk fed McGuire his next goal and the Saints took a 4-1 lead into the half.

Max Bolton scored his 11th goal of the season for Lander (11-4-2, 5-2-0) in the 67th minute.

Peik Koskinen answered quickly, less than one minute, with an unassisted goal.

Stefan Zec-Bobek capped the avalanche of offense with a goal of his own in the 75th minute.

Andrea Lubbia collected seven saves, which tied his season high. Jacob Withers had six saves for the Bearcats.

Flagler out-shot Lander 15-14 and held a 12-9 edge in shots on goal. The Bearcats had a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

Flagler heads to Morrow, Georgia to face Clayton State University in a PBC Tournament quarterfinal match on Tuesday (Nov. 12). The winner advances to the semifinal round, which will be held Nov. 15 at Evans, Georgia, against Lander.

NOTE: The six goals scored by Flagler against Lander tonight were the most in the series history, for either team, dating back to 2009.
