ST. AUGUSTINE –
Annie Habeeb scored the only goal of the match as No. 3 (United Soccer Coaches Division II) Flagler College held off a stubborn Albany State University side 1-0 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Wednesday night at Saints Field.
"Albany State came here to frustrate us and did a very good job,' said head coach
Ashley Martin. "We had some good chances that their goalkeeper thwarted, but we managed to scramble one over the line, which proved to be critical."
Before the match, the Saints honored their four seniors
Addie Foster,
Charlene Nowotny,
Ali Ritter, and
Concepcion Sanchez.
"I am immensely proud of the seniors for what they have achieved in their careers here at Flagler," added Martin. "To get the win tonight for them was fabulous."
Nowotny chested down a ball that an Albany State player had tried to clear out of its zone. She dribbled to the outside of the box and lobbed a pass to Habeeb who was streaking to the left post, whose deft touch eluded the Rams keeper to give Flagler (14-0-1 overall, 8-0-1 PBC) the lead in the 36
th minute
Sanchez had a chance at an insurance goal in the 73
rd minute, but the ball hit the crossbar.
Sarah-Lisa Dubel turned in her sixth clean sheet of the season as she did not face a shot on goal. Her counterpart, Alexa Castro made 10 saves for Albany State (4-9-0, 2-7-0) and kept her team in the game.
Flagler out-shot Albany State 19-1 and had an 11-0 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints had nine corner kicks.
The Saints extended their home undefeated streak to 13 matches (12-0-1).
