Saints push Hurricanes in exhibition game

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A Gedi Juozapaitis three-pointer got Flagler College to within eight (57-49) midway through the second half, but the University of Miami used a 12-0 run late in the game for an 86-65 win in an exhibition game at the Watsco Center.

Damerit Brown sank a three-pointer 17 seconds into the game to give the Saints a lead. His next trey snapped a 9-0 run by the Hurricanes.

Flagler trailed by as many as 22 points in the first half and went into the locker rooms trailing 47-26.

The Saints made the necessary adjustments and went on a 21-5 run on the Atlantic Coast Conference's Hurricanes. Flagler limited Miami to 1-for-10 shooting in that 6-minute, 10-second span.

Juozapaitis drove the lane for a one-handed dunk to cut the Hurricanes' lead to 14 (55-41) with 15:27 left. That forced a Miami timeout. Later, Chris Metzger hit a jumper in the paint and Brown drained another three as the Saints whittled the deficit to 11 (57-46) with just under 13 minutes left.

But after an Allante Pickens basket got Flagler back to 10 (64-54), Kameron McGusty started a 12-0 run for the Canes, and he was responsible for eight of those points.

Juozapaitis led the Saints with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Brown added 12 points, all coming on 3-pointers. Derrick Ellis, Jr. added eight points, a game-high nine assists, and five rebounds.

McGusty led five Hurricanes in double figures with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Rodney Miller tacked on 16 points. Sam Waaredenburg grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

Flagler has one more tune-up, Tuesday at Florida Atlantic University at 7 p.m., before opening the 2019-20 season at home on Nov. 8 against Southern Wesleyan University at 3 p.m.
