BOCA RATON, Fla. –
Gedi Juozapaitis sank three free throws to pull Flagler College to within five (82-77) but Florida Atlantic University was able to hang on to win 92-81 Tuesday night at Abessinio Court at FAU Arena.
The game was the season opener for Florida Atlantic, a member of NCAA Division I and Conference USA. For Flagler, the game was an exhibition.
The Owls held a 21-point (53-32) lead at the half and led by as many as 22 (73-51) midway through the second half. Juozapaitis started a 26-9 run by the Saints over the next 6-minutes, 15-second with the first of three consecutive 3-point field goals.
Florida Atlantic withstood the run and finished the game on a 10-4 spurt.
Juozapaitis scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half. He finished 7-of-15 from the field and drained four treys. Juozapaitis added 11 rebounds to complete the double-double and tacked on four steals and three assists. He made 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
Logan Swackhammer scored 11-of-his-18 points in the first half as he made 7-of-8 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range.
Derrick Ellis, Jr. contributed 12 points and three assists.
The Saints made 13-of-15 from the free throw line and made all eight of their attempts in the second half. Flagler forced 21 turnovers and cashed them in for 26 points.
Florida Atlantic used 13 players in its opener and was led by Cornelius Taylor's 20 points. Karlis Silins chipped in with 13 points while Michael Forrest added 12 more. Madiaw Niang grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
Flagler opens the season at home on Friday against Southern Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium in the second game of the Southeast Region Crossover classic format tournament.
