AMERICUS, Ga. –
Sara Sandberg scored two goals and tallied two assists as No. 4 (United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll) Flagler College stormed past Georgia Southwestern State University 7-1 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Wednesday night at Hurricane Field.
Sanberg's first goal came in the eighth minute as she received a pass from
Charlene Nowotny at the top of the goal box, spun and kicked to the left and tucked the ball inside the far post to put Flagler (13-0-0 overall, 7-0-0 PBC) ahead 1-0.
She scored again in the 42
nd minute as she cleaned up a saved header that had bounded away from the keeper. That goal put the Saints up 2-1. The goal was Sandberg's 17
th of the season, which is tied for the most in NCAA Division II.
The Saints would erupt for five more goals in the second half.
Annie Habeeb and
Liz Hall each scored two goals. Sandberg and Nowotny each tallied two assists in the second half alone. Nowotny, the nation's leader in assists (17), finished with three.
Payton Johnson scored the lone goal for Georgia Southwestern (3-10-1, 0-7-0). She scored in the 41
st minute.
Sarah-Lisa Dubel tallied three saves in 81-plus minutes of work.
Nadia Fung went the rest of the way for the Saints and she collected a save. Hannah Morrone finished with four saves for the Lady 'Canes.
Flagler out-shot Georgia Southwestern 28-6 and held an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Saints also held a 10-1 favor in corner kicks.
The Saints now turn their attention to No. 20 University North Georgia. Those two teams will meet on Saturday (Oct. 26) at 1 p.m. at Dahlonega. Flagler is one of only two undefeated teams in the country.
