PEMBROKE, N.C. –
Maria Castorino Mujica scored the golden goal with one minute left in the first overtime period as No. 4 (United Soccer Coaches Division II) Flagler College edged the University of North Carolina at Pembroke 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference women's soccer match Saturday afternoon at Varsity Grounds.
Just prior to the goal, a player from UNC Pembroke (7-3-0 overall, 3-2-0 PBC) was called for a foul. Castorino Mujica took the free kick from 20 yards out and the shot passed by the near post and into the back of the net.
The loss snapped UNCP's 21-match home unbeaten streak (20-0-1) as well as an 18-match home win streak. The last loss at home for the Braves was to Limestone College (1-0) on Sept. 3, 2017.
"The team found a way to win an extremely tough game," said head coach
Ashley Martin. "The staff are incredibly proud of the classy way the players handled themselves in a difficult situation and ultimately prevailed as victors."
Lorena Lopez scored the equalizer for Flagler (10-0-0, 5-0-0) in the 70
th minute when she converted a penalty kick.
Katy Ryan got the Braves on the board first with a goal with 56 seconds left in the first half.
Sarah-Lisa Dubel was busy between the posts for the Saints as she collected a season-high eight saves. Gina Ryan tallied five saves for the Braves.
UNC Pembroke out-shot Flagler 24-16 and held a slight 9-7 edge in shots on frame. Both teams had eight corner kicks.
Flagler hosts Eckerd College on Wednesday (Oct. 16) at 7 p.m. at Saints Field in its final non-conference match of the regular season.
