Saints battle back from slow start only to lose in OT

AIKEN, S.C. – Flagler College got off to a slow start, but scrapped back to force overtime only to fall 60-58 at the University of South Carolina Aiken in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at the Convocation Center.

USC Aiken snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 9-6 overall as well as moving to 5-4 in the Peach Belt. The Pacers are a perfect 6-0 in home games. Flagler had its four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

Kwajelin Farrar led the Pacers with a game-high 26 points and 16 rebounds. She scored six-of-the-team's-eight points in overtime. Star Toomey added 10 points and 13 rebounds.

The Saints scored just three points in the first quarter, tying an all-time low for points in a quarter, on 1-of-16 shooting from the field. Flagler trailed by 15.

Flagler answered with a strong second quarter (19-9) to trail 27-22 at the half.

The Pacers had a 15-point lead (43-28) with 4:19 left in the third quarter after Kyrie' Chandler made a pair of throws.

The Saints answered with a 15-0 run over the next 4:02 to tie the game at 43. Tabitha Odabe's five-foot jumper tied the game as the third quarter came to a close.

Chris Wilson, the PBC's Player of the Week, made the second of two free throw attempts to give the Saints their first lead of the game, 46-45, with 7:12 to play in regulation. She led the Saints with 13 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.

Flagler trailed by four (52-48) with 1:45 remaining. Wilson again made the second of two free throws and then Kierra Crane sank a three-pointer with seven seconds left to force overtime.

The teams went back-and-forth in the extra session, but Chandler's layup with two seconds left proved to be the winning basket.

Odabe added nine points, 10 rebounds, and blocked three shots for the Saints.

Flagler forced 17 USC Aiken turnovers and cashed them in for 22 points. The Saints were out-rebounded 50-43. Flagler is 2-5 when it loses the rebounding battle.

Up next for the Saints is Young Harris College on Saturday (Jan. 19) at 1:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
