Second half surge propels Saints past Bearcats

ST. AUGUSTINE – A 13-4 run midway through the second half put the game out of reach as Flagler College defeated Lander University 90-75 in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler won its fourth game in a row and improved to 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the Peach Belt. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Bearcats. The last Flagler win in the series was Jan. 25, 2014 at Flagler Gym. Lander, which entered the game on a five-game winning streak, dropped to 9-5 overall and 6-2 in conference play. This was the worst loss (scoring margin) this year for the Bearcats and Lander had not lost by this many points since last year's PBC title game against North Georgia (76-60).

"I am so proud of how our team performed today," said head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery. "It was a true team effort as we beat one of the top teams in our region. We played unselfish basketball. We followed the scouting report, defended well and executed offensively. I challenged our guards to take care of the ball and they responded against a tough Lander full-court press."

Flagler used a balanced scoring attack in the victory. The Saints had six players score in double figures and was led by Kierra Crane's 18 points. Chris Wilson added 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field. Ivana Boyd, Dayuna Johnson, and Malaysia Robinson each tallied 13 points while Tabitha Odabe recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Lander held a 41-39 lead at the half and held a 54-51 lead after a Jessica Harris three-pointer with 5:41 left in the third quarter.

Boyd made back-to-back layups to give the Saints a 55-54 lead and they never trailed again.

The Saints out-scored the Bearcats 51-34 in the second half.

Flagler shot 69 percent (20-29) from the field in the second half and dominated in the paint out-scoring Lander 32-8. The Saints only turned the ball over three times in the second 20 minutes as opposed to the 14 times in the first half.

Harris scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Bearcats. Symone Starks added 14 points and five steals while Mylea McKenith tacked on 10 points.

Flagler returns to the road to face the University of South Carolina Aiken on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
