ST. AUGUSTINE –
Vaughn McCall poured in a season-high 29 points but it wasn't enough as Flagler College lost in overtime to Lander University 90-88 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gymnasium.
Lander improved to 5-9 overall and 4-4 in the Peach Belt. The Bearcats have won three-of-their-last-four games. Flagler dropped to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
McCall made 9-of-20 from the field and sank five treys as well as making 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
The game featured 11 ties and 10 lead changes. The score was deadlocked at 34 at the half and 79 at the end of regulation. The largest lead by either team was seven points.
Flagler trailed 78-72 with 58 seconds left in regulation, but a pair of free throws by
Logan Swackhammer and then an old-fashioned three-point play by
Jeffercy Jean got the Saints to within one point (78-77).
After a made free throw by Lander, Flagler got the ball back with eight seconds left and with just three ticks left, Rahu Purdie fouled McCall at half court. McCall stepped to the line and sank both shots to force an extra five minutes.
A Purdie three-pointer gave Lander an 88-83 lead with 1:04 left to go, but McCall was fouled when he attempted a three-pointer and sank all three free throws. With 46 seconds left, Jean stole a lazy pass by Purdie and made a layup to tie the game. Purdie was able to redeem himself on the next possession as he drew a foul and made both attempts with 41 seconds to go.
Flagler had a couple of chances, but a pair of three-point attempts could not find their mark.
Jean and
Gedi Juozapaitis each collected 13 points. Jean fell one rebound shy of a double-double as he finished with nine boards.
Chris Metzger came off the bench to contribute 11 points and six rebounds.
DeMari Davis collected a team-high 11 rebounds. Swackhammer finished with a game-high five assists.
Elijah Alston led the Bearcats with 19 points and he completed the double-double with a game-high 13 rebounds. DeShundre Rucker added 15 points while Purdie tacked on 14 points, four assists and three steals. Sidney Robinson chipped in with 12 points.
The Saints visit the University of South Carolina Aiken on Wednesday (Jan. 16) at 7:30 p.m.
