Quick start propels Saints past Mountain Lions, 72-58

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – Flagler College opened the game on an 18-4 run and never looked back in a 72-58 win at Young Harris College in a Peach Belt Conference women's basketball game Wednesday afternoon at the YHC Basketball Arena.

Flagler snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the Peach Belt. Young Harris dropped to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Dayuna Johnson got the Saints started with a 3-pointer 13 seconds after the tip.

Later, Sarah Reid's layup cut Flagler's lead to 5-4, but Tatiyana Rock followed with a layup of her own which started an avalanche of 13 unanswered points by Flagler. A Staci Miller trey with 3:01 left in the first quarter capped the Saints run.

Flagler held an 18-9 lead at the end of the quarter.

The Saints held a 44-29 lead at the half and held its largest lead, 61-42, with 9:23 left in the game.

"I was very pleased with our first half performance," said head coach Erika Lang-Montgomery. "Our defense fueled our offense and that is how we want to play."

Chris Wilson scored a game-high 15 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field. She added eight rebounds and tallied four steals. Tatiyana Rock added a season-high 13 points while Kierra Crane finished with a double-double of 12 points and a career-high 10 assists. Johnson chipped in with 10 points.

"We shot the three well today," added Lang-Montgomery. "I thought we moved the ball well against their zone and found open shooters."

Flagler shot 62.5 percent (10-for-16) from 3-point range. Johnson was a perfect 4-for-4 while Crane made 4-of-7.

Avery Jordan and Sarah Woghiren each scored 11 points for Young Harris. Haylie Shope grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and had three steals.

Flagler will break for the holidays and returns to the court on Jan. 5 against Georgia College at 1:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
