Saints struggles at the line continue in 50-42 loss

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College could only sink 9-of-22 from the free throw line in a 50-42 loss to Saint Leo University in a non-conference women's basketball game Tuesday evening at Flagler Gymnasium.

Saint Leo evened its record to 2-2 while Flagler had its two-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 4-2.

Flagler has shot 56.7 percent or lower from the charity stripe in its last four games.

The Lions got off to a hot start as they made 7-of-10 from the field in the first quarter. Conversely, the Saints struggled at 18.2 percent from the field and trailed 15-5.

Neither team shot well in the second quarter and Saint Leo took a 24-16 led into the half.

Flagler trailed by as many as 13 in the third quarter, but a 13-4 run got the Saints to within four (40-36) with 6:34 left in the game after an old-fashioned three-point play by Chris Wilson. The Saints could not get any closer.

Casey Wortley scored a game-high 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. She added five rebounds and had two blocked shots. Alani Gallagher added nine points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots. Gina Brierley chipped in with eight points, five rebounds, and seven assists.

Wilson led the Saints with 11 points, six rebounds, and four steals. Tabitha Odabe grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Ivana Boyd contributed six points and seven rebounds. Dayuna Johnson tallied four assists.

Flagler is off until next Saturday (Dec. 1) when it opens Peach Belt Conference play against Clayton State University at 1:30 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
