ST. AUGUSTINE –
Sara Davis led Flagler College with 13 kills and a .435 hitting percentage, but it wasn't enough as No. 21 (AVCA Division II Top 25) Saint Leo University won 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 26-24) in a non-conference volleyball match Tuesday evening at Flagler Gymnasium.
The match was a late addition as both teams had lost several matches to Hurricane Irma. The same two teams will play at Saint Leo on Oct. 31.
Saint Leo, which hadn't played since Sept. 2, remains undefeated at 5-0 while Flagler drops to 5-2.
Nina Vattovaz led the Lions with 13 kills and completed the double-double with 11 digs. Victoria Omoregie added eight kills with only one error on 19 swings for an efficient .368 hitting percentage. Anna Garrett tallied 31 assists and Jen Kruglova collected 15 digs. Annabella Arcari recorded three total blocks.
Davis only had three errors on 23 swings.
Cadie O'Hern and
Taja Valmyr added nine and eight kills, respectively.
Kayla Norelli scooped up a match-high 16 digs.
Tara Savisky tallied 26 assists.
Maddie Erwin tied her season-high with 10 digs. O'Hern and
Jordan Taylor each recorded three block assists.
The match featured 19 ties and seven lead changes.
In the final set, the Saints rallied from a 21-17 deficit to tie the score at 22 after a hitting error by Vattovaz. A kill by Omoregie and a solo block by Arcari set up match point. Flagler fought off two match points due to a setting error by the Lions and a kill by O'Hern, which tied the score at 24. However, Omoregie put away her sixth kill of the set and Paloma Da Silva finished it with an ace.
Flagler opens its Peach Belt Conference slate on Saturday (Sept. 23) against the University of South Carolina Aiken at 2 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
