FINDLAY, Ohio – Flagler College rebounded from its first loss of the season with a pair of quality wins over NCAA Tournament teams, from last year, in Cedarville University and the University Findlay. The Saints defeated the Yellow Jackets 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 25-20) in the opener on Saturday at Croy Gymnasium and then took down the Oilers 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 9-25, 26-24, 15-3) in the nightcap.
Flagler improved to 5-1 while Cedarville fell to 3-9 and Findlay dropped to 10-1. The Oilers only lost twice (11-2) at home last year. Findlay's lost non-conference home loss came Sept. 13, 2013 when the University of Southern Indiana won, 3-1.
Taja Valmyr recorded a team-high 44 kills this afternoon and added 31 digs.
Sara Davis added 24 kills, 10 digs and seven total blocks while
Karlie Redfern supplied 22 kills and 27 digs.
Tara Savisky tallied 84 assists and 22 digs.
Kayla Norelli corralled 40 digs.
In the opener against Cedarville, Valmyr recorded a career-high 25 kills and hit .250 with eight errors on 68 swings. Davis added 11 kills and had four total blocks. Redfern turned in her first career double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs. Savisky recorded her first double-double of the season with a match-high 44 assists and 11 digs to go along with three service aces. Norelli collected 17 digs.
Flagler hit an efficient .245 (56 kills, 17 errors, 158 attempts). The Saints hit .304 in the first set and .293 in the fourth set.
In the second match against Findlay, one of the top teams in the Midwest Region, Valmyr was on fire again with 19 kills and 16 digs. Davis added 13 kills, hit .323, and added three total blocks. Redfern contributed 12 kills and 12 digs. Savisky tallied 40 assists to go along with 11 digs. Norelli gathered a team-best 23 digs.
Valmyr recorded a pair of kills at the end of the fourth set to help the Saints extend the match to a fifth set. Flagler opened on a 10-0 run and never looked back in the 15-3 win. The Saints hit .333 (8-2-18) during the fifth set and was led by Redfern and Valmyr with three kills apiece.
Flagler returns home to take on Saint Leo University on Tuesday (Sept. 19) at 6 p.m. at Flagler Gymnasium.
