Saints sweep Braves to extend winning streak to five

ST. AUGUSTINE – Taja Valmyr led a balanced scoring attack with nine kills as Flagler College swept the University of North Carolina Pembroke 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-13) in a Peach Belt Conference match Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gym.
 
Flagler extended its winning streak to five matches and the Saints improved their overall record to 10-3 and their Peach Belt record to 4-1. UNC Pembroke dropped to 4-15 overall and 0-6 in conference play.

Valmyr hit a career-high .533 as she had only one error on 15 swings. Sara Davis added eight kills and two total blocks. She turned in another efficient performance as she registered a .467 hitting percentage. Karlie Redfern recorded eight kills and a team-high 13 digs while Jordan Taylor chipped in with seven kills and hit a solid .385. Tara Savisky tallied 35 assists while Kayla Norelli finished with nine digs, six assists and three aces.

Makaylah Elliott  led the Braves with six kills and had two total blocks. Michelle Voyer added five kills coming off the bench. Cayce Bell collected a match-high 19 digs and Bailee Jones tallied 17 assists.

The Braves started the first with a 2-1 lead, but fell victim to a 5-0 run by the Saints. Flagler never looked back. Valmyr recorded six of her nine kills in the first set and she hit a robust .857.

The second set saw Flagler sprint out to an 8-2 lead. The Saints hit .406 in the set with 17 kills and four errors on 32 swings. Taylor and Victoria Bowrosen each recorded four kills.

The final set mirrored the second set as the Saints opened with an 8-2 lead. The Braves struggled with a -.043 hitting percentage. Redfern led the Saints with four kills.

Flagler takes on Eckerd College tonight at 7 p.m. at Flagler Gym.
