Flagler wins five-set match over Eckerd

ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College and Eckerd College played an intense five-set match (22 ties and 10 lead changes) where the Saints were able to come away the victors 25-20, 25-27, 25-20, 15-25 and 15-3 in a non-conference volleyball match Saturday night at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler extended its winning streak to six matches and improved to 11-3 overall. Eckerd dropped to 7-5.

Taja Valmyr led the Saints with 18 kills while Sara Davis added 13 kills, three aces and three block assists. Davis hit an economical .417 as she had only three errors on 24 swings. Karlie Redfern continues to shine as she recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 10 kills and 15 digs. Redfern hit a season-best .400 as she had 25 swings without an error. Tara Savisky notched her fifth double-double of the season with a match-high 46 assists to go along with 10 digs. Kayla Norelli collected a team-high 17 digs. Cadie O'Hern recorded four total blocks.

Paula Hoffman recorded a match-high 25 kills for the Tritons. She fell one dig shy of a double-double with nine. Abbie O'Ferrell added 10 kills. Fernanda Reis tallied 41 assists while Kaitlyn Sibson corralled a match-high 20 digs. Arielle Erillo had three of Eckerd's nine service aces.

The Saints hit .400 in the first set as they spread out the attack among five different players. Davis and Valmyr each had three kills while Redfern, O'Hern and Jordan Taylor added two apiece.
 
Eckerd squeezed out a 27-25 win in the second set and was bolstered by Hoffman's eight kills.

Flagler held a 21-19 lead in the third set and went on to close it on a 4-1 run. Valmyr had five kills for the Saints.

The fourth set was controlled by the Tritons as they hit .387 (16 kills, four errors, 31 attempts). Hoffman came up big again with six kills and hit .308.

The fifth set has been owned by Flagler so far this season. Going into the match the Saints were a perfect 3-0 in matches that needed a deciding set.
Flagler opened on an 8-1 run and never looked back. Valmyr had five kills and finished the set with a .400 hitting percentage. The Saints held the Tritons to a -.211 hitting percentage (two kills, six errors, 19 swings).

Up next for Flagler is the South Region Crossover (Gulf South Conference vs. Sunshine State Conference) next weekend (Oct. 13-14) at the Finley Center in Hoover, Alabama. Matches will be announced tomorrow.
