Saints roll past Choctaws in four sets

HOOVER, Ala. – After a slow start, Flagler College rolled past Mississippi College 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-11, 25-12) in a non-conference volleyball match at the Finley Center.

Flagler extended its winning streak to seven matches and improved to 12-3. Mississippi College fell to 9-12. This was each team's first match in the South Region Crossover, which pits 12 Gulf South Conference teams against 11 Sunshine State Conference teams and Flagler.

Taja Valmyr recorded her eighth double-double of the season as she finished with a match-high 13 kills and added 12 digs. Valmyr hit .278 as she only had three errors on 36 swings. Karlie Redfern just missed a double-double as she recorded nine kills and a team-high 13 digs. She added three total blocks. Sara Davis added nine kills and five total blocks. She hit a red-hot .500 with 18 errorless swings and had three service aces. Tara Savisky logged 42 assists. Victoria Bowrosen added three aces.

Krista Zieschang and Ashton King each had seven kills for the Choctaws. Kayana Mitchell and Hannah Rue finished with six apiece. Sydney Chandler tallied 17 assists while Jill Brown collected a match-high 16 digs.

In the first set, Mississippi College, the No. 10 seed in the GSC, opened with a 6-3 run. King had a pair of kills early while Autumn Frost had a block and a kill. The Saints were able to fight back and tied the score on 10 different occasions, and held a short-lived 19-18 lead after a double-block by Cadie O'Hern and Jordan Taylor. Later, Mitchell broke the 23-all tie with a kill and then had an ace to end the set. Flagler hit just .108 with 11 kills and seven errors on 37 swings.

The rest of the way was all Flagler.

In the second set, three different Saints had three kills apiece and the team hit a robust .579 with 12 kills and one error on 19 swings.

Valmyr collected six of her kills in the third set and hit .429 as she had 14 errorless swings. Flagler hit .400 with 13 kills and one error on 30 swings. Bowrosen recorded all three of her aces in the set.

In the fourth set, the Saints hit .407 with 12 kills and one error on 27 swings. Davis and Taylor each recorded three kills.

Flagler is back on the court tomorrow (Oct. 14) as it opens with Union University of Jackson, Tennessee at 10 a.m. (Central) and then will wrap up the tournament with the University of West Georgia at 4:45 p.m. (Central).
