Saints charge past the Patriots

ST. AUGUSTINE – Sara Davis collected a match-high 14 kills and added three total blocks to lead Flagler College to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 25-18) win over Francis Marion University in a Peach Belt Conference volleyball match Friday night at Flagler Gymnasium.

Flagler extends it winning to streak to four matches and improves to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in the Peach Belt. Francis Marion drops to 6-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

Davis finished with a sizzling .542 hitting percentage as she had one error on 24 swings. Taja Valmyr added nine kills and eight digs while Karlie Redfern chipped in with eight kills, a match-high 13 digs and three total blocks. Tara Savisky added 32 assists while Kayla Norelli collected 12 digs.

Erika Hartings and Lenee' Blot led the Patriots with six and five kills, respectively. Blot added four total blocks while Hartings recorded eight digs. Carrie McGinnis tallied 19 assists and Natalie Ferrrell had 10 digs. A pair of local products played in tonight's match – Tori Carpenter from Creekside High and Courtney Abdur-Rahim from Bartram Trail High. Carpenter came off the bench to tally two assists while Abdur-Rahim collected six digs.

The Saints had to fend off a stubborn Patriot side in the first set. Leading 20-19, Flagler would finish the set on a 5-1 run. Two unforced errors by the Patriots helped, but Jordan Taylor had a kill and a block while Valmyr finished the set with a kill.

The second set was dominated by Flagler. The Saints opened with a 12-1 run and never looked back. Davis had six kills and did not have an error on seven swings for a sparkling .857 hitting percentage.

A kill by Georgia Garrison in the third set cut the Flagler lead to two points (18-16), but the Saints rambled off the next five points before finishing the match on a Patriot service error.

Flagler hosts the University of North Carolina Pembroke tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Flagler Gym. The Saints will conclude the day with a match against Eckerd College at 7 p.m.
