Saints hold off pesky Lady Bulldogs

HOOVER, Ala. – Sara Davis, Karlie Redfern and Taja Valmyr combined for 34 of Flagler College's 46 kills in a sweep (25-20, 25-23, 30-28) of a stubborn Union University team in a volleyball match at the South Region Crossover Saturday morning at the Finley Center.

Flagler ran its winning streak to eight matches and improved to 13-3. Union fell to 12-10.

Davis finished with 12 kills and hit. 429 as she had three errors on 21 swings. Redfern also had 12 kills and she hit .321 with three errors on 28 swings. Redfern added eight digs and three total blocks. Taja Valmyr recorded her second consecutive double-double, and her ninth of the season, with 10 kills and 12 digs. Tara Savisky nearly had a double-double with 44 assists and nine digs. Kayla Norelli collected a match-high 13 digs.

Katie O'Malley led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 kills and 11 digs. Christa Karns came off the bench to add 10 kills and two total blocks. Ceciley Blanchard chipped in with nine kills and three total blocks. Bre Carlton fell one dig shy of a double-double with 32 assists and nine digs.

The match was close throughout as there were 27 ties and 12 lead changes. In the third set alone, there were 15 ties and four lead changes.

In the first set, the Saints used a 7-2 run to break up an 8-all tie. Regan Swift had a kill and a block while Redfern record two kills. The Lady Bulldogs could not get any closer than three points for the remainder of the set. Redfern led Flagler with five kills. Blanchard recorded five for Union.

The Lady Bulldogs sported a 14-9 lead in the second set until the Saints went on a torrid 10-4 run to take a short-lived 19-18 lead. A hitting error by O'Malley gave the Saints a 22-21 lead and then Jordan Taylor and Swift blocked Clare Taylor to give Flagler a commanding 23-21 lead. The Saints went on to with 25-23. Redfern finished with four kills and two blocks assists in that set.

The third set was back-and-forth as Union held the largest lead at four points. Flagler had match point (24-22), but a kill by Karns forced a Saints timeout and AC Winchester came out of the break to tie the score with an ace. Davis had two of her six kills in the set at a pivotal point in the set. The first staved off set point by the Lady Bulldogs, who led 28-27, and on the next rally, Davis gave Flagler a 29-28 lead. The match ended on an a hitting error by the Lady Bulldogs.

Flagler concludes the tournament at 4:45 p.m. (Central) against the University of West Georgia.
