ST. AUGUSTINE –
Pedro Silva made sure the outgoing Flagler College senior men's soccer players were going to go out in style as his goal in the 26
th minute was the lone goal of the match as Flagler defeated No. 21 (NSCAA Division II Top 25) Lander University in a Peach Belt Conference contest Saturday night at Saints Field.
Flagler improved to 5-4-1 overall and 5-2-0 in the Peach Belt. Lander, which started the season with a 9-0 record, has fallen to 10-2-0 overall and 4-2-0 in conference play.
Prior to the start of the match, Flagler honored its eight seniors:
Michael Amaya,
Caleb Austin,
Jonny Cosgrove,
Nevio Golos,
Joey LaSala,
Erlend Lofsgaard,
Marco Warren and
Tyler Zulewski.
Silva gathered a loose ball at the top of the box and buried a shot into the back of the net to give the Saints the lead.
However, the Saints had to weather an early penalty kick. A Lander player was tripped up in the box in the 10
th minute and Sam Lofts took the penalty kick for the Bearcats. He tried to beat Flagler keeper
Lex Craggs to his left, but Craggs was there to deny the shot and the follow-up shot by Ian Foulger went off the crossbar.
Craggs would go on to collect six saves and record his second clean sheet of the season with the help of a stout defense. Barrett Nielsen, the reigning PBC Goalkeeper of the Week, tallied four saves and his defense bailed him out on one occasion with a team save.
Lander came in as the top scoring team in the league with 29 goals and 25 assists. The last time the Bearcats were shut out was Oct. 29, 2014 when the played to a scoreless double-overtime draw against the University of North Georgia.
Lander out-shot Flagler 16-12, but Flagler held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. There were 50 fouls whistled in the match and seven cards issued.
Up next for Flagler will be its last regular season home game of the season which is Tuesday, Oct. 20 against Erskine College at 4 p.m. at Saints Field.
