PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Flagler College women's golf team, ranked No. 16 in the latest top 25 poll, have had a successful run in the past three Peach Belt Conference Championships and will look to continue this trend this weekend (April 20-21) at the Callaway Gardens' Lakeview Course.
Flagler won the inaugural title in 2010, and finished second in each of the last two championships. The Saints finished in a tie for second place last year with a 626, 11 shots out of first place.
The Saints will have some pressure with a potential NCAA Division II postseason berth on the line. Flagler currently sits in 11th place in the South Region rankings, which combines both the South and Southeast regions. Only the top nine advance to the regional and there is no automatic berth. Armstrong Atlantic State University (No. 8) and UNC Pembroke (No. 9) would be the last two teams in, if the regionals were announced today.
Leading the Saints is last year's PBC Freshman of the Year,
Marie Santacroce. She leads the team with a 76.89 strokes per round average. Santacroce had a pair of top five finishes and six top 10s. She tied for first place in a dual with Missouri-St. Louis. Her second round 70 at the Lander Bearcat Invitational was her season-low. Santacroce tied for sixth place with a 2-over 146.
A trio of newcomers has performed as well as fifth-year director of golf
Santiago Cavanagh could have expected. Sophomore transfer
Olivia Ferrer has four top five finishes and four top 10s to go with her 78.06 scoring average. She has finished in the top 13 in the last three tournaments, including an impressive second place showing at the United States Women's Invitational in the last regular season tournament. Freshman
Stephanie Tucker is third on the team with a 78.50 average. She has three top five finishes and four top 10s. Tucker had the best score in the dual with UMSL, a 4-over 76, and finished second in her first collegiate tournament, at the Anderson Invitational, with a 9-over 153. Fellow classmate,
Megan McCracken, is averaging 80.60 strokes per round.
Nicole Keyser,
Marissa Marinan and
Danielle Welker have all had top 10 finishes this season as well.
