Flagler and Columbus State split twinbill

3/30/2013 7:48:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. – Flagler College and Columbus State University split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Ragsdale Field. Columbus State took the first game 6-4, but Flagler rallied in game two to win 3-2.

Flagler is now 15-18 overall and 7-14 in the Peach Belt Conference. With the win in game two, it was Flagler's second win on the road this year, the first since an 8-1 win against Florida Tech on Feb. 12. The victory snapped a 10-game road losing streak. Columbus State is now 16-16 overall and 10-7 in conference play.

In the opener, the Saints struck first when Brett Moreland doubled home Jake Jacob and just two batters later, Jay Laurienzo singled home Moreland to give Flagler a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Columbus State got a run back in the second and then took a 3-2 lead in the third when it took advantage of a Flagler error to score a run and then added another later.

The Saints tied the game 3-all when Moreland drove in Jacob again, this time with a base hit in the fifth.

The Cougars took advantage of a Saints miscue in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Martin Castro reached first on a throwing error by catcher Matt Morningstar and advanced to second on the play. He scored on Seth Corbitt's single and Columbus State grabbed a 4-3 lead.

Ryan Lewis added insurance with a two-run home run in the eighth inning.

Moreland drove in another run in the top of the ninth, but Flagler couldn't tie the game.

Brodie Leibrandt (4-1) earned the win after tossing seven innings and scattering nine hits. He allowed three runs, walked four and struck out five. Hart Mizell closed the game to earn his fourth save of the year. He allowed two hits and a run.

Lewis led the Cougars offense with a single, home run, two runs scored and two more knocked in. J.D. Pullen singled twice and scored a run while Corbitt singled, doubled and had two runs batted in.

Danny Brown (2-4) tossed 6 2/3 innings, surrendered seven hits, one earned run, walked four and fanned five.

Moreland went 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and he scored a run. Joe Post singled twice.

In the second game, Flagler trailed 2-0 going into the fourth inning, but Laurienzo wiped away the deficit with one swing of the bat when he belted a three-run home run down the left field line.

That's all reliever Justin Ratte (2-4) would need to earn the win. He did have to wriggle out of a couple of jams but he never allowed a run to score. The Cougars had a lead-off triple in the sixth and couldn't score the run. They had runners at first and second in the seventh and they were stranded. The most dangerous situation had to be the ninth when Columbus State had runners at the corners and two outs, but again, couldn't get the hit to score a run.

Ratte tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings in relief, allowed four hits. Jake Brandenberger started and lasted 3 1/3 innings and scattered six hits and two runs.

Laurienzo finished 2-for-4 with the home run. Mitch Okey singled twice.

Jordan Villhauer (3-1) tossed six innings, surrendered four hits and three runs. He was wildly effective with six walks and eight strikeouts.

Cameron Scott went 3-for-4 with a double and a run batted in.

Flagler is on the road on Wednesday (Apr. 3) at Rollins College at Winter Park in a 6 p.m. game.
