Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga. – Jarrod Carlton tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings and retired the first 12-fo-14 batters he faced to help Valdosta State University defeat Flagler College 6-3 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday evening at Billy Grant Field.
Valdosta State won its second consecutive game to even its record at 10-10. Flagler lost its seventh consecutive game and fell to 9-14.
Carlton did not factor in the decision, but he allowed just one hit, walked three and struck out two batters.
The Blazers broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Jake Fields led off the frame with a double to right field. He advanced to third on Michael Gouge's single to right. Cooper Lemond drove in Fields with a fly ball to center. After Gouge was thrown out stealing, the next two batters reached on walks. A fielding error by Flagler shortstop
Joe Post allowed one run to score and kept the inning going. Matthew Fears followed with a two-run single to cap the scoring.
VSU struck for single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Jake Hanson hit an RBI-single for Flagler in the seventh and
Nick Kranick hit an RBI-triple with two outs in the ninth.
Benjamin Weil (2-1), the second of four pitchers used by the Blazers, recorded the win. He tossed one and two-thirds scoreless and hitless innings and walked a batter while striking out four.
Fears went 3-for-5 and was a home run shy of the cycle. He collected two runs batted in and scored another. Gouge singled twice.
Chris Patrick (2-2) tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowed five hits and one earned run. He walked four and struck out one.
Kranick went 2-for-4 with the triple, RBI and he scored a run.
Flagler returns to its Peach Belt Conference schedule this weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 16) at 1 p.m. at Drysdale Field on “Friends of Flagler Day.”
