FLORENCE, S.C. – No. 14 (Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30) Francis Marion University pounded out 15 hits in the first game and Matt Broderick won a pitchers' duel in the nightcap to complete the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of Flagler College Saturday afternoon at Cormell Field. Francis Marion took game one 11-3 and then won game two 2-1.
Francis Marion improved to 26-13 overall and 14-9 in the Peach Belt. Flagler fell to 22-16 overall and 10-11 in conference play.
In the opener, the Patriots used a four-run third inning to break open a 1-all tie. Francis Marion sent 10 men to the plate and banged out four hits. Michael Wilson led off the inning with a double to the gap in right-center. After a walk to the next batter, a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. Wilson would score on Buddy Sosnoskie's sacrifice fly. John Jones followed with a run-scoring single to give FMU a 3-1 lead. Two batters later, Jarrod Reed hit a two-run single.
The Patriots tallied two runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
Flagler plated single runs in the fifth and sixth.
Kyle Foti knocked in
Devon Hellett (Ponte Vedra Beach,Fla., Gulf Coast CC) with a single in the sixth.
Spencer Jordan (6-3) tossed 5.1 innings and scattered 11 hits, allowed three runs and struck out four batters. Don Sandifer came on to pitch the last 3.2 innings to record his second save. He struck out four and did not allow a hit.
Francis Marion's first four hitters in the lineup collected 10 hits, scored eight runs and drove in seven. Sosnoskie went 3-for-4 with two doubles, four runs batted in and he scored a run. Tyler Hibbs singled three times, scored twice and drove in another. Tyler Boyd went 2-for-3 with a triple, scored three runs and knocked in two runs. Wilson doubled twice and scored two runs.
Jack Charleston (Gainesville, Fla., Buchholz HS) (1-5) started for Flagler and tossed 2.2 innings and allowed six hits and five runs.
Nate Fudala (Cincinnati, Ohio, Turpin HS) singled three times for the Saints. Hellett singled, doubled and scored a run.

In game two, Broderick (5-1) tossed seven innings and scattered four hits and allowed one run to earn the victory. After giving up a lead-off home run to
Brett Moreland (Charles Town, W.Va., Frederick CC), he retired the next 10 of 12 batters and only allowed three Saints to reach scoring position the rest of the game. Broderick retired 12 batters on fly outs.
The Patriots rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth to take the lead. Jacob Golliday led off the inning with a walk and moved to second two batters later on an infield hit. A single by Hibbs loaded the bases with one out. Sosnoskie grounded out to Hellett at shortstop who then flipped to
Will Percy covering second for the force out, but Golliday scored from third to tie the game. Then Flagler starter
Jonathan Armold (Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Pine Crest School) (5-4) threw a wild pitch which allowed the eventual game-winning run to score.
Hibbs came in from second base to close the game. He picked up his third save of the season after tossing two perfect innings with two strikeouts.
Boyd collected a pair of singles and scored a run for the Patriots. Francis Marion had 10 hits in the second game, all were singles.
Armold tossed six innings and surrendered eight hits and two runs.
Moreland had half of Flagler's hits with a double and a home run. Fudala singled twice.
Flagler visits Rollins College on Wednesday (Apr. 11) at 6 p.m.
